Or, I think it's my web server. Sludgie has been having major technical difficulties for the past week and a half. It's been terribly annoying - in fact, until two days ago I couldn't even post anything apologizing, or explaining, or saying "pardon our dust!" with a picture of a smiling construction worker. I couldn't log in and post at all. In fact, I tried to post a comment on my last entry, hoping people might read it, and I couldn't even do that.

Now I can post again, but I can't resolve the home page, which means that these words I write are floating anonymously off into the ether. I promise, if you can read this, that I will solve these problems ASAP. But you probably can't read this, so screw it, I promise to cure AIDS and stop global warming by this Friday as well.

Crap.

I don’t know if losing 52%-47% actually means a prop literally bursts into flames as it goes down, but I like to picture that’s what happened. I like to picture Prop 90 exploding in mid air and raining sparks and smoking ruins down on the fancy condominiums of Howie Rich (the New York real estate magnate behind it.) This is a classic example of how deceptive the wording of these “bait and switch” propositions can be, and how crucial it is to research something before you sign off on it. Just because the smiling aliens have a book called “To Serve Man,” doesn’t mean they come in peace. That shit’s a cookbook, my friend.

Prop 84, the $5.4 billion parks and water bond, passed, ensuring that no matter how dry and desert-like and drought-prone Southern California becomes, we’ll always have enough H2O for Raging Waters water park in San Dimas.

And there will be no tax on oil companies to fund alternative energy research. Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and Julia Roberts weren’t enough star muscle to pass Prop 87. Not when Chevron was behind the opposition. Okay, California, if you like Chevron so much, let’s see Chevron star opposite Richard Gere in the next charming Gary Marshall rom-com. Let’s see Chevron win you over with its trademark toothy smile! Fat chance.

While I voted for Phil, I don’t hate Gov. Schwarzenegger. I kind of hate his name, because I always misspell it. An entire childhood growing up on Ahnuld films hasn’t made me any better at spelling his name, I always get a vowel wrong. But he’s a moderate in a national sweep of moderates (a vast number of new seats were picked up by blue dog Democrats,) and as a leader on the environment, we could do a lot worse. I worry for his physique. All this governing has severely chipped away at his pumping-iron time. But the people of California have spoken. We don’t want some nerdy not-famous non-movie star “policy wonk” running our state. We want an action figure! I can see the California Democratic strategy meetings for 2010 now. “Hey, I hear Vin Diesel’s gay. Maybe he’s a Democrat…”

Of the LCV’s notorious “Dirty Dozen” candidates (of which there was a total of fifteen – don’t ask me why,) TEN were unseated and two more are still too close to call. (Strangely enough, I profiled both of those candidates together in one entry. Is it a coincidence? The incredible and mysterious sway that Sludgie holds over the populace? My secret ability to predict the future revealing itself, which until now only manifested in the sloppy paintings of cheerleaders and Japanese guys I made in angry, alcoholic isolation in my Manhattan apartment? You’ll never know…)

But perhaps the biggest smile creases on my cheeks come from the defeat of Richard Pombo in the 11th District, the man who sought to single-handedly unravel every shred of wildlife and wilderness protection in the nation. Someone on NPR last night referred to him as a “cheap target for environmentalists,” citing the huge national anti-Pombo effort for his loss. I wouldn’t call him “cheap” by any stretch – in his time heading the House Resources Committee (House Natural Resources Committee to you, Mr. Don “Cranky” Young,) his actions were very, very costly for our natural treasures. While the House flip would unseat Mr. Pombo from his chair anyway, it’s a wonderful message to send Washington that you can’t go on an incredibly blatant, drill-any-pristine-spot-of-land, kill-defenseless-forest-animals binge, and get away with it.

Santorum and his weepy clan waved good-bye, Conrad Burns and his 10-gallon hats, Robert Ehrlich and his power plant pandering – so many detestable leaders of government are gone. Here is a quick summary of the environmental issues and ballot measures I've covered, to help you be a highly informed voting citizen:

California Props

NO on 90, the "Eminent Domain" Attack on the Environment

YES on 87, Alternative Energy Research

YES on 84, the Water and Park Protection Act

As Republican governors go, Arnold Schwarzenegger is better than most for the environment. In fact, his global warming pact has made him a leader in the nation. However, his overall record is still somewhat spotty. A few years ago, when I first became interested enough in environmental politics to actually tear articles out of the LA Times and put them in a manila folder, I tore an article about a man who, as State Treasurer, was taking unusual steps to help the environment, launching a "Green Wave" initiative to encourage investment in the environment in California. That was Phil Angelides. I'll be voting for him tomorrow.

And wherever you are in the country, if you've got one of these knuckleheads representing you, vote them out:

LCV's Dirty Dozen 2006

Thanks to all of you who visit your polling places tomorrow and let your voices be heard.

Oh - and most importantly, if you live in California's 11th District, for Christ's sake, VOTE OUT POMBO!

Mostly it’s about water. According to the website, less than 1% of our state budget goes to protecting water resources. And yet, California uses a massive amount of water per year: for spa treatments, backyard jacuzzis, restaurant patio misters, coffee enemas, and those wonderfully green lawns sprouting up in the middle of what is clearly a fucking desert. Where else but California would you find Liquid Om, the bottled water company that uses the “principles of sound therapy to infuse purified water to the frequency of the earth as it revolves around the sun, a specific vibration that is expressed in meditation circles by the mantra Om?”

We love water. But with an expected 25 million new residents by 2040, we’re going to have to spend a little more than 1% to make sure it’s available to us. Some have criticized this bill because it seems to overlap with another measure spending a good bit of money on water. Well, this helps preserve wetlands and wildlife habitats as well. And besides: 1%, people!

Its theory is that people are so scared the government is going to snatch up their house to allow a luxury hotel to build on their land, they’ll approve a prop that would sell their first born into slavery.

Prop 90 allows virtually anyone to sue under any circumstances, claiming that any new law or provision negatively affects their property value. Taxpayers would pay billions in newly defined “damages” to property owners, and local governments would find it nearly impossible to acquire property for new schools, transit facilities, public works, utilities and fire protection measures. It would effectively kill efforts for historic preservation, preserving hunting areas, and of course, any kind of wildlife reserve whatsoever – coastal areas, open lands, farmland, forest preserves, endangered species habitats.

From California Progress Report:

The law will also hurt consumers. It would require the state to pay businesses if it wanted to take new actions to protect medical or financial privacy. New laws to make sure that women actually get equal pay could not be enacted unless the taxpayers paid for the increased wage levels themselves.

Opponents have dubbed it the “Taxpayer Trap.” Because apparently “Bat-shit Crazy Prop That Will Make This A Miserable Place” wasn’t catchy enough. Vote No, and tell your family to vote No, and run down your block screaming for your neighbors to vote No.

But while Richie looks around at the placid lakes, forests and marshes of Pennsylvania and considers their design intelligent, he doesn’t consider them his idea of God’s best work. That was his idea of God’s later stuff, after he sold out, and Rick is totally a fan from the early days, not some poseur. Richie prefers the fossil fuels that are underneath those ho-hum marshes and forests that come from the remains of dinosaurs that didn’t really exist.

Aside from his stellar record of 10% lifetime voting for the environment, and 6 times voting against raising fuel efficiency standards, and voting against mercury emissions standards, renewable energy and global warming leadership, Richie has one number one spot he’s probably less proud of: Rasmussen Reports, a public opinion polling firm, calls him the “most vulnerable congressional incumbent this election season.” So with a little luck, we’ve seen the last of Richie’s dismal stay in Washington. But he’s got some deep-pocketed friends to help him fight for his seat. While his idea of God has provided precious little in terms of campaign funds over the years, the oil and gas industry has forked over roughly half a million.

The official list, which I will update daily…

1. Rep. Richard Pombo (CA) – Pomby has already been Profiled here for his Jackassery. It’s difficult to be anything resembling an environmentalist without a deep-seated, searing hatred of Rep. Richard Pombo, enemy to all creatures that can’t plow into a redwood forest, pry a tree loose with its teeth, strip the bark off and ship the lumber to Richie’s backyard to build an extension on his deck. If a creature could do that, Pombo might not try to bring about its extinction. But you never know. Aside from trying to gut every wildlife and wild land protection, Pombo is famous for his all-expense-paid taxpayer-funded RV trip through the national parks he planned to sell off.

2. Sen. Rick Santorum (PA) – Rick Santorum is such a fan of his idea of God that he can’t stop pushing his idea of God’s agenda in his political career, including the “Santorum Amendment” to the No Child Left Behind bill, which, if it had passed, would have promoted teaching intelligent design in public schools.

3. Rep. Bob Beauprez (CO)

4. Sen. Conrad Burns (MT) – If old and poor people can’t afford heat in the winter months, it must be the oil and gas companies that need assistance. At least, that’s apparently the assumption of Sen. Conrad Burns (MT,) who voted against heating assistance programs for the poor and elderly but voted to extend tax credits for the energy industry during its record-breaking $32 billion windfall. Maybe it’s just that Conrad doesn’t really like people. After all, he also campaigned vigorously against a ban on human testing of pesticides, questioning, “Do you stop a whole industry?” Wow. Isn’t that a quote from Abraham Lincoln, about abolishing slavery? Oh wait… I might be wrong about that...

5. Rep. Katherine Harris (FL) – Is there any point in writing about Rep. Katherine Harris (FL?) There’s virtually no way she could win her campaign for Senate, because, as LCV pointed out, she flip-flopped on offshore drilling. Oh yeah, she also claimed that not voting for Christians will “legislate sin,” took bribes from the same guy as Rep. “Weepy” Duke Cunningham, has gone through more campaign staffers than Spinal Tap has drummers, stood in profile for an entire Hannity and… Who Cares appearance so her ample bustline could answer questions for her, and is so erratic one of her campaign managers programmed his cell phone to ring with the theme from The Exorcist when she called. Possibly the only thing she has going for her is that the Republican Party won’t endorse her as a candidate (and these days, who wants to be associated with those guys?)

6. Sen. George “Macaca” Allen (VA) – Sen. George Allen (VA) has made headlines for a francophone ethnic slur, but even before this he showed a rather poor talent for demonstrating tolerance, posing for photos with white supremacist group Council of Conservative Citizens (because apparently white supremacist groups like really easy-to-remember initials. Which is not to insinuate anything about AAA, who have helped thousands get easy roadside assistance…). He’s featured in the Dirty Dozen for his lifetime LCV score of 1%, and “has yet to meet a bill sponsored by Big Oil that he didn’t like,” according to LCV president Gene Karpinski.

7. Rep. Heather Wilson (NM) – When Rep. Heather Wilson was asked about lowering arsenic levels in drinking water, she said the lower level was “wrong-headed and based on bad science.” She has voted pro-pollution at every turn (arsenic, no on MTBE cleanup, no on fuel efficiency,) believing no toxic mess nasty enough to force a corporation to spend their hard-earned profits cleaning up after themselves.

8. Rep. Jim Talent (MO)

9. Rep. Dan Boren (OK)

10. Rep. J.D. Hayworth (AZ)

11. Rep. Deborah Pryce (OH)

12. Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX)

Each year LCV publishes a handy list of the politicians most beholden to the gas and oil barons that pull the strings and govern our country from their secret villain’s lair deep inside the volcanic crater of Mount St. Helens. With LCV’s help, half of these Congress members got voted out of office. They recently published their Dirty Dozen list 2006.

The LCV’s website somewhat confusingly breaks these folks down into The Oil Slick Seven and assorted other riffraff without a cool gang name, but I’m willing to come up with one right now. How about The Gas Guzzling Gang. Or The Non-Fab Five. Or The Sinkhole Cinco.

Actually, these wouldn’t work because there’s only four remaining members. Perhaps one of them got stabbed with a shiv in a rumble. You don’t mess with the Oil Slick Seven. Especially if you don’t even have a cool gang name. A more likely explanation, provided by LCV, is that Reps. Bob Ney and Tom Delay were removed since they withdrew from their races. But that adds up to thirteen. Seriously, LCV – what the fuck?

To try and clarify matters, I’ll profile one candidate per day over the next twelve days, so that you can take notes and become a wiser voting citizen.
